SIGHTS AND SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS

Between art, culture and science

Insiders and newcomers agree: Trieste is always worth a visit. There is so much to explore and discover in the beautiful city and its surrounding area. Always expect contrasts, the unexpected and something special that tells of a varied and multicultural history. Viennese coffee house culture, Classicism and Art Nouveau, science and sailing regattas, diverse cuisine and a lively zeitgeist. Here is a selection of the absolute must-sees.

approx. 85 m from the apartment

Piazza Unità d’Italia

Just a few steps from Ca' Argento is Piazza Unità, lined with magnificent palazzi and the city hall. It is not only the main square in Trieste and a popular postcard motif, but also one of the few squares in Europe that is open to the sea. The perfect starting point for a walk along the Rive di Trieste and to Molo Audace.

approx. 450 m from the apartment

Canal Grande

Yes, Trieste too has a Canale Grande. In contrast to the famous waterway in Venice, however, life is much quieter and more leisurely here. Picturesque cafés and palazzi line both sides of the riverbank, connected by the Ponte Rosso. The end of the canal is marked by the imposing neoclassical architecture of the church of Sant' Antonio Nuovo.

approx. 200 m from the apartment

Castello e cathedral San Giusto

The medieval castle and fortress, perching on the hill of the same name, high above the old town centre, is without doubt one of Trieste’s best-known landmarks. The Castello is used for exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts and other cultural events and houses a collection of ancient Roman sculptures and architectural fragments from the surrounding area.

approx. 8,5 km from the apartment

Castello di Miramare

Panoramic views and a profusion of different plants. Castello Miramare is located on the tip of the Grignano headland and therefore has the most exclusive view of the Gulf of Trieste. The complex was built around 1860 by Archduke Maximilian von Habsburg and is surrounded by a 22-hectare park with rare plant species and monumental trees.

Museums

Trieste offers a variety of museum experiences – ranging from art, literature, history and science to music. Particularly popular are the Museo Revoltella of modern art or the Natural History Museum - the oldest of its kind in Italy with over two million exhibits. The Trieste Marine Aquarium and the interactive science museum Immaginario Scientifico are also well worth a visit.

Special locations

The former Trieste fish market Pescheria Centrale in Riva Nazario Sauro is now home to the Salone degli Incanti - a multi-purpose centre for cultural events. The Barcola district - the official beach of the people of Trieste - is always worth a visit. The renowned Barcolana sailing regatta also takes place here every second Sunday in October. Don’t miss out!

Trieste Karst

A few kilometres outside the city lies the Trieste Karst region, a rocky high plateau and popular wine region with a wide range of leisure activities. In the numerous agritourism you can sample local wines, cured hams, cheeses and other local products from the Italian and Slovenian Karst. Don't miss: a cave tour in the Grotta Gigante!

Food and drink

Trieste is widely known for its excellent and above all varied cuisine. This is not surprising - the marine and trading city has always had access to a wide variety of culinary imports. In addition, there are the cultural influences that characterise the cityscape as much as the dinner plates. In the old town centre, coffee houses and patisseries line up alongside restaurants, enotecas and aperitif bars.

Shopping

Trieste offers a wide range of shopping opportunities! Find your perfect purchases in the city’s pedestrian zones. One of them - the Jewish Quarter with its antique dealers, bookshops and speciality shops - is conveniently located right on our doorstep. Further top addresses: Viale XX Settembre, Via Delle Torri to Canale di Monterosso and Via San Nicolò - and of course the Mercato Coperto with fresh products from the region.
